Tune-Up
Services
Back in the fall, we had a rush of customers coming in from around Upland and Chester saying their cars felt sluggish, like they were fighting to get going. Some were getting worse gas mileage. Others were hearing weird noises. Most of them hadn't had a tune-up in years. Once we went through everything, including spark plugs, filters, and fuel systems, those same cars where running smooth again inside of a day.
S&S Automotive Service has been doing tune-ups right here at 1 Upland Avenue since 1986. That's 40 years of keeping cars running for families in Upland, Chester, Marcus Hook, and all across Delaware County. When your car doesn't feel right, we know how to figure out why.

Trusted by Upland Drivers for over 40 years
Just last month, a frantic customer called us at 9 AM. Her dashboard light came on during her commute through Upland, and she didn't know what to do. Turns out, she was 3,000 miles overdue for her oil change. This happens more than you'd think in our busy Delaware County community.
At S&S Automotive Service, we've been helping Upland families keep their cars running smoothly since 1986. Located right here on Upland Avenue, we know the stop-and-go traffic on 352 and how those short trips to the Springfield Mall can be tough on your engine oil.
Why Regular Oil Changes Matter in Upland
Your car's oil breaks down faster than you think. Between the winter freeze and summer heat we get here in southeastern Pennsylvania, plus all that crawling traffic on I-95, your engine works overtime. Old oil turns thick and dirty, causing serious damage that costs way more than a simple oil change.
We see this all the time:
customers who wait too long and end up needing major engine work. Don't let that be you. Fresh oil keeps everything moving like it should and saves you thousands down the road.

What Is a Tune-Up, Exactly?
A lot of people ask us "what does a tune-up even include?" Good question. The honest answer is it depends on your car, how many miles it has, and when the last one was done.
But most of the time, a tune-up at S&S Automotive Service covers:
- Spark plug inspection and replacement
- Air filter and cabin filter check
- Fuel system inspection
- Ignition system check
- Throttle body cleaning (if needed)
- A full look at belts, hoses, and fluids
We don't just replace parts and send you on your way. We take time to look at the whole picture so nothing gets missed.
Spark Plug Replacement
Spark plugs are one of those things most people don't think about until their car starts misfiring or struggling to start. We see it all the time, someone comes in saying their car is "running rough" and the first thing we check is the plugs.
Bad spark plugs can cause:
- Poor fuel economy
- Slow acceleration
- Hard starts, especially on cold mornings
- Engine misfires or shaking
If your car has over 30,000 miles and you haven't had the plugs looked at, it's probably time. We carry plugs for all makes and models, domestic and import. We can usually get this done same-day.
Engine Air Filter Replacement
This one is simple, but it makes a big difference. A dirty air filter chokes your engine. It can't breath right, so it uses more fuel and performs worse.
We check your air filter every time your car comes in. If it looks bad, we'll show you and let you decide. No pressure. Some customers from around the Linwood and Trainer area are surprised how dirty a filter can get just from everyday driving on Route 452 and I-95.
Most air filters are cheap to replace and take about five minutes. It's one of the easiest ways to keep your car running well between major services.
Fuel System Service
The fuel system is something most people don't think about until their car starts hesitating or stalling. We've seen fuel injectors get so gummed up that the car barely runs.
A basic fuel system service at S&S can include:
- Fuel injector cleaning
- Fuel filter inspection (if accessible)
- Throttle body cleaning
- Checking fuel pressure
If your car feels like it's "hunting" for fuel or takes a second to respond when you press the gas, that's usually a fuel system issue. Give us a call, and we'll take a look.
Ignition System Inspection
The ignition system is more than just spark plugs. It includes the ignition coils, wires (on older vehicles), and the distributor cap if your car has one. When any part of the ignition system starts to go, you'll usually feel it.
Signs of ignition problems:
- Car won't start or takes several tries
- Engine light is on
- Rough idle or shaking at stops
- Noticeably worse gas mileage
We have the diagnostic tools to pin down ignition problems fast. We're not guessing — we're reading your car's data and comparing it to what it should be.
Check Engine Light Diagnosis
Sometimes a tune-up starts with that annoying little orange light on your dashboard. Customers come in all the time saying, "my check engine light is on, what does that mean?"
It could be something small like a loose gas cap. Or it could be a misfiring cylinder or oxygen sensor issue. We don't charge you just to plug in a scanner — we actually talk through what the code means and what your options are.
We've been diagnosing check engine lights in Upland and the surrounding area since before most of the scanner technology even existed. We learned this stuff the old-fashioned way first.

Tune-Up Service Questions From Our Customers
Got questions about tune-up service? We got answers. Here's what Upland drivers ask us most.
How do I know if my car needs a tune-up?
There are a few things to watch for. If your car is harder to start than usual, getting worse gas mileage, idling rough, or the check engine light is on, those are all signs that something might be off. Even if nothing feels obviously wrong, most vehicles benefit from a tune-up every 30,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on the type of spark plugs they use. When in doubt, just give us a call and describe what your car is doing. We can usually tell you pretty quickly if it sounds like a tune-up issue.
How much does a tune-up cost at S&S Automotive Service?
The cost depends on what your car actually needs. A basic tune-up with spark plug replacement is going to be different from a full ignition and fuel system service on a high-mileage vehicle. We don't give flat-rate quotes over the phone because every car is different. What we will always do is give you a clear estimate before we start anything, so there are no surprises. Call ustoday or stop by, and we'll take a look and let you know what we're talking about.
How long does a tune-up take?
For most cars, a standard tune-up takes somewhere between one and two hours. If we find other issues that need attention, like a dirty throttle body or a failing ignition coil, it might take a little longer. We'll always let you know upfront what to expect. Many of our customers from around Chester and Marcus Hook drop their car off in the morning and pick it up by lunch.
Can I just get my spark plugs replaced without a full tune-up?
Absolutely. We don't require you to buy a package of services. If you just want spark plugs replaced, we can do that. If you only need an air filter, we can do that, too. We'll always take a look at the overall condition of your car while we're in there, and if we notice something that needs attention, we'll mention it — but we won't pressure you into anything extra. You know your car and your budget better than we do.
