Ram Service & Repair in Upland, PA | S&S Automotive Service

Ram trucks are built tough, but they still need a mechanic who understands what makes them different from every other truck on the road. S&S Automotive Service has been providing Ram truck service and repair in Upland, PA since 1986.

Ram Truck Owners in Delco Deserve a Shop That Knows These Trucks

Ram separated from Dodge and became its own brand in 2010, but its truck-building roots go back decades. The Ram name first appeared on Dodge pickups in 1981, and the line has grown into one of the best-selling truck brands in America. The Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 are everywhere on Delaware County roads, from contractors hauling materials down Route 352 to families who just need a dependable daily driver with enough room for the whole crew.

What makes Ram trucks different is their ride quality and powertrain options. The Ram 1500 was the first full-size truck to use a coil spring rear suspension, which gives it a smoother ride than the leaf spring setups on competing trucks. Ram also offers the legendary 5.7L HEMI V8, the 3.6L Pentastar V6, the 3.0L EcoDiesel, and newer mild hybrid eTorque systems. Each of these engines has its own maintenance needs, and getting them right is what separates a good truck shop from a great one. After decades of working on Ram trucks for drivers in Upland, Aston, Brookhaven, and across Delaware County, we know these powertrains inside and out.

Trusted by Upland Drivers for over 40 years

Just last month, a frantic customer called us at 9 AM. Her dashboard light came on during her commute through Upland, and she didn't know what to do. Turns out, she was 3,000 miles overdue for her oil change. This happens more than you'd think in our busy Delaware County community.

At S&S Automotive Service, we've been helping Upland families keep their cars running smoothly since 1986. Located right here on Upland Avenue, we know the stop-and-go traffic on 352 and how those short trips to the Springfield Mall can be tough on your engine oil.

Why Regular Oil Changes Matter in Upland

Your car's oil breaks down faster than you think. Between the winter freeze and summer heat we get here in southeastern Pennsylvania, plus all that crawling traffic on I-95, your engine works overtime. Old oil turns thick and dirty, causing serious damage that costs way more than a simple oil change.

We see this all the time: customers who wait too long and end up needing major engine work. Don't let that be you. Fresh oil keeps everything moving like it should and saves you thousands down the road.

Trusted by Upland Drivers for Over 40 Years

A customer rolled into our shop last fall with his Ram 2500 making a ticking noise from under the hood. He had already been to two other shops that couldn't figure it out. Turned out, it was a broken exhaust manifold bolt, a common HEMI problem we've fixed dozens of times. He was back on the road the same day.

At S&S Automotive Service, we've been helping Upland families keep their vehicles running right since 1986. Our shop sits right on Upland Avenue, and we see what Delaware County roads do to trucks. Between the potholes on Chester Pike, the salt on I-95 every winter, and the heavy loads these trucks carry, Ram trucks in this area take a beating that trucks in warmer climates never deal with.

Why Regular Maintenance Matters for Ram Trucks

Ram trucks are workhorses, and most owners push them hard. Towing, hauling, and daily driving through stop-and-go traffic all put extra stress on the engine, transmission, and brakes. The HEMI V8 in particular is sensitive to oil change intervals. Skip a few, and the Multi-Displacement System (MDS) lifters can fail, leading to a repair bill that makes your eyes water. Regular oil changes with the right oil weight keep that HEMI running strong for hundreds of thousands of miles.

Pennsylvania's freeze-thaw cycle also eats at brake components and suspension parts faster than you'd expect. A quick check twice a year catches small problems before they become expensive ones.

Ram Truck Problems We See Most Often at Our Upland Shop

Ram trucks are solid vehicles, but every brand has weak spots that show up over time. Here are the Ram-specific issues we diagnose and repair most often, and the warning signs you should watch for.

Ram 1500 Repairs and Known Issues

The Ram 1500 is the most popular truck on Delaware County roads, and we service more of them than any other model. The 2009–2018 Ram 1500 with the 5.7L HEMI is known for exhaust manifold bolt failures. You'll hear a ticking sound on cold startup that gets quieter as the engine warms up. That's exhaust gases leaking past a broken bolt, and it won't fix itself. Left alone, it can damage the manifold and catalytic converter.

The HEMI MDS (Multi-Displacement System) is another frequent issue. This system shuts down four cylinders to save fuel, but the lifters that make it work can collapse, especially on trucks with inconsistent oil change schedules. A failed MDS lifter causes a noticeable misfire and tick. We run full engine diagnostics to confirm the problem and get it fixed before it damages the camshaft.

Ram 1500 trucks from 2013–2018 also develop air suspension problems on models with the optional four-corner air ride system. The air springs can crack and leak, causing the truck to sag on one corner, usually overnight. If your Ram is sitting lower in the morning than when you parked it, bring it in before the compressor burns out trying to keep up.

Ram 2500 and 3500 Common Problems

The heavy-duty Ram trucks are built for serious work, and we see plenty of them from contractors and tradespeople across Chester, Aston, and Boothwyn. The 6.7L Cummins diesel in the 2500 and 3500 is one of the most reliable engines ever put in a truck, but it's not bulletproof.

The diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system on 2013 and newer Cummins trucks is the biggest headache. DEF heaters fail, sensors go bad, and quality sensors can throw the truck into limp mode with no warning. When your dashboard lights up with a message saying the truck will derate in 100 miles, that's a DEF system problem. Our electrical diagnostics team pinpoints whether it's a heater, sensor, or pump issue so you're not paying to replace parts that aren't broken.

The 68RFE automatic transmission in gas-powered 2500 and 3500 trucks is another weak link. Hard shifts, delayed engagement, and overheating under tow are common symptoms. Regular transmission fluid changes and a quality external cooler make a huge difference in how long that transmission lasts, especially if you tow boats to the shore or haul heavy loads around job sites.

Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Service

The 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 offered in the 2014–2019 Ram 1500 gives great fuel economy for a full-size truck, but it comes with its own set of problems. The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) cooler can crack and leak coolant into the intake system. If you see white smoke from the tailpipe or your coolant level keeps dropping with no visible leak, that's a sign the EGR cooler needs attention.

Oil change intervals on the EcoDiesel are also tighter than most owners realize. The factory recommendation is every 10,000 miles, but we see better long-term results when EcoDiesel owners change oil every 7,000 to 8,000 miles, especially with the stop-and-go driving typical around Springfield, Ridley Park, and the Route 1 corridor.

Ram eTorque Mild Hybrid Issues

Newer Ram 1500 trucks (2019 and up) come with the eTorque mild hybrid system on both the V6 and V8 engines. This system uses a 48-volt battery and belt-driven motor-generator to improve fuel economy and smooth out the start-stop function. Most of the time it works well, but we've seen issues with the 48-volt battery losing charge, the auto start-stop system acting rough, and check engine lights related to the eTorque module.

These problems need a shop that understands both traditional truck repair and modern hybrid electrical systems. Our electrical diagnostics service covers the eTorque system from top to bottom, so we can tell you whether you need a new 48-volt battery, a software update, or a deeper electrical repair.

Ram ProMaster and ProMaster City Maintenance

Ram's commercial vans are showing up more and more in Delaware County. Delivery drivers, plumbers, electricians, and small business owners all rely on the ProMaster and ProMaster City for daily work. The ProMaster uses a 3.6L Pentastar V6 with a front-wheel-drive layout, which is unusual for a large van. Common issues include oil cooler housing leaks on older Pentastar engines, sticky brake calipers from heavy city driving, and premature front tire wear because these vans are nose-heavy.

We handle brake repair and tire repair and replacement for ProMaster vans regularly. If your work van pulls to one side or your front tires are wearing unevenly after just 20,000 miles, schedule a visit so we can check alignment and brake drag.

What Our Ram Truck Service and Repair Covers

S&S Automotive Service handles every aspect of Ram truck maintenance and repair at our Upland location. Here's what you can count on:

  • Oil Changes and Fluid Services: Ram trucks demand the right oil for the right engine. The HEMI V8 uses 0W-20 full synthetic, the Cummins diesel uses a specific CK-4 rated diesel oil, and the EcoDiesel has its own requirements. Using the wrong oil or skipping changes on any Ram engine leads to expensive problems down the road. We match the correct oil and filter to your exact Ram model every time. Regular oil changes are the cheapest insurance you can buy for your truck's engine.

  • Brake Service for Ram Trucks: Ram trucks are heavy vehicles that put extra stress on brake components, especially when towing or hauling. The 2500 and 3500 models use oversized rotors and calipers, but even those wear down with Delaware County's hilly terrain and stop-and-go traffic. We replace pads, resurface or replace rotors, service calipers, and flush brake fluid on all Ram models. If your Ram vibrates or pulls when you hit the brakes, schedule a brake repair visit before the problem gets worse.

  • Engine and Transmission Diagnostics: Ram trucks use complex engine management systems across every powertrain option, from the HEMI's MDS system to the Cummins' DEF controls to the eTorque's hybrid electronics. A check engine light on a Ram can mean dozens of different things. We use professional-grade scan tools that read Ram-specific codes and live data to find the actual problem. Our engine diagnostics service goes beyond pulling a code. We test sensors, check pressures, and trace issues back to their source.

  • Tire Services: Ram trucks need tires matched to how you use them. An all-terrain tire for weekend off-road trips is different from a highway tire for daily commuting on I-476. Running the wrong tire size or type affects ride quality, braking distance, and fuel economy. We handle flat repairs, rotations, balancing, and full tire repair and replacement for every Ram model. We also check suspension components during every tire service because worn ball joints and tie rod ends chew through tires fast.

  • Electrical System Repairs: Modern Ram trucks are packed with electronics, from the 12-inch Uconnect touchscreen to the eTorque hybrid system to the advanced trailer brake controller. When something goes wrong with any of these systems, it takes the right diagnostic tools and experience to find the cause. Our electrical diagnostics service covers everything from dead batteries and alternator failures to complex module issues on newer Ram trucks.

  • Pennsylvania Inspection and Emissions Testing: Your Ram truck needs a yearly safety and emissions check to stay legal on PA roads. Diesel Ram trucks have additional emissions equipment that must pass testing. We're a certified state inspection and emissions station, so if your Ram needs any repairs to pass, we handle everything right here at 1 Upland Avenue. No extra trips to another shop.

Seasonal Ram Truck Tips for Delaware County Drivers

Winter road salt is the biggest hidden threat to Ram trucks in our area. It eats at brake lines, corrodes suspension bolts, and accelerates rust on the undercarriage where you can't see it. Every spring, we recommend bringing your Ram in for an undercarriage inspection once the last snow melts. We check brake lines for corrosion, look for leaking shocks and worn ball joints, and catch the damage before it turns into a breakdown. Spring is also pothole season around Upland, Aston, and Brookhaven, and one bad hit on Chester Pike can knock your alignment out and start chewing through tires fast.

If you tow during the summer months, get your transmission fluid, brakes, and cooling system checked before your first big trip. Towing puts 3 to 5 times more stress on these components than normal driving, and the HEMI V8 runs hot under load. Old coolant and worn brake pads that feel fine around town can fail you quickly when you're pulling a trailer down I-95 in July heat.

Ram Truck Service & Repair Questions from Delco Drivers

Ram truck owners tend to be hands-on and well-informed. Here are the questions we hear most often at our shop, along with straight answers you can count on.

  • How often should I change the oil in my HEMI Ram truck?

Most HEMI-powered Ram trucks call for an oil change every 8,000 to 10,000 miles under normal driving conditions. But "normal" is a stretch for most Delaware County drivers. If you do a lot of short trips, sit in stop-and-go traffic on I-95, tow anything, or idle your truck for long periods, you're in the "severe" driving category. In that case, we recommend changing oil every 5,000 to 6,000 miles. The MDS lifter system in the HEMI is especially sensitive to dirty or low oil, and replacing lifters costs far more than a few extra oil changes per year.

  • Is it worth fixing the exhaust manifold tick on my Ram 1500?

Yes. That cold-start ticking sound on HEMI engines means one or more exhaust manifold bolts have broken. It might seem minor since the noise quiets down once the engine warms up, but the leak allows hot exhaust gases to escape in the wrong place. Over time, this can warp the manifold, damage the catalytic converter, and cause a failed emissions test during your PA state inspection. Fixing it early is a straightforward repair. Waiting turns it into a bigger and more expensive job.

  • How much does Ram truck maintenance and repair typically cost?

Ram truck maintenance and repair costs vary depending on the model, engine type, and what service is needed. A basic oil change on a HEMI V8 costs less than a diesel oil change on a Cummins because diesel engines hold more oil and use specialized filters. Routine maintenance is always more affordable than major repairs, which is why keeping up with scheduled service saves you money over time. We give you a written estimate before starting any work, and we'll tell you what needs to happen now versus what can safely wait until your next visit.

  • Can an independent shop work on my Ram truck without voiding the warranty?

Absolutely. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act is a federal law that protects your right to have your Ram truck serviced at any qualified repair shop without losing warranty coverage. The dealership cannot void your warranty just because we changed your oil or replaced your brakes. We document every service we perform, including the parts used and fluid specifications, so you have a clear record if the dealer ever questions it. Many of our Ram truck customers switched from the dealer because they get the same quality work with more personal service and fair pricing.
