Acura Service & Repair in Upland, PA | S&S Automotive Service
Acura's are built to perform, but they still need a mechanic who respects the engineering behind them. S&S Automotive Service has been providing Acura service and repair in Upland, PA since 1986.
Acura Owners in Delco Deserve a Shop That Knows the Brand
Acura is Honda’s luxury division, and it has been building refined, performance-oriented vehicles since 1986, the same year we opened our doors at 1 Upland Avenue. Models like the Integra, TL, and Legend helped define the affordable luxury market. Today, the TLX, MDX, RDX, and the reborn Integra carry on that tradition of blending everyday reliability with a premium driving experience.
Because Acura shares DNA with Honda, some shops treat them like any other Honda. That’s a mistake. Acura vehicles use more advanced electronics, tighter tolerances, and sport-tuned suspensions that need specific attention. After
decades of servicing Acura's for families in Upland, Aston, Brookhaven, and across Delaware County, we know the difference between how a Honda CR-V and an Acura RDX should be maintained, and that difference matters for the life of your vehicle.

Trusted by Upland Drivers for over 40 years
Just last month, a frantic customer called us at 9 AM. Her dashboard light came on during her commute through Upland, and she didn't know what to do. Turns out, she was 3,000 miles overdue for her oil change. This happens more than you'd think in our busy Delaware County community.
At S&S Automotive Service, we've been helping Upland families keep their cars running smoothly since 1986. Located right here on Upland Avenue, we know the stop-and-go traffic on 352 and how those short trips to the Springfield Mall can be tough on your engine oil.
Why Regular Oil Changes Matter in Upland
Your car's oil breaks down faster than you think. Between the winter freeze and summer heat we get here in southeastern Pennsylvania, plus all that crawling traffic on I-95, your engine works overtime. Old oil turns thick and dirty, causing serious damage that costs way more than a simple oil change.
We see this all the time:
customers who wait too long and end up needing major engine work. Don't let that be you. Fresh oil keeps everything moving like it should and saves you thousands down the road.

Acura Problems We See Most Often at Our Upland Shop
Acuras are well-built cars, but every brand has weak spots that show up over time. Here are the Acura-specific issues we diagnose and repair most often, and the warning signs you should watch for.
Acura MDX Repairs and Known Issues
The MDX is one of the most popular luxury SUVs on Delaware County roads, and for good reason. It’s spacious, reliable, and holds its value well. But we regularly see transmission problems on 2001–2006 models, where the automatic transmission can slip or jerk between gears. The 2014–2020 third-generation MDX is known for excessive oil consumption on the 3.5L V6 engine, which can sneak up on you between oil changes. If you’re adding a quart of oil every 1,000 miles, that’s not normal. Bring it in so we can check the piston rings and valve seals. We also see worn front struts on higher-mileage MDX models, which causes a loose, bouncy ride over the bumpy roads around Chester Pike and Route 1.
Acura RDX Common Problems
The RDX has been Acura’s best seller for years, and we service plenty of them here in Upland. The first-generation RDX (2007–2012) with the 2.3L turbo engine is known for turbocharger failures and carbon buildup on the intake valves. If your RDX feels sluggish on acceleration or you hear a whistling noise from the engine bay, the turbo system needs a look. The newer third-generation models (2019+) are more reliable, but they can develop infotainment glitches and electrical issues with the touchpad system. We run full electrical diagnostics to sort out whether it’s a software issue versus a hardware problem that needs a physical repair.
Acura TLX and TL Service
The TLX and its predecessor, the TL, are solid sedans that Delaware County commuters love. The biggest issue we see on the 2004–2008 TL is automatic transmission failure. This was a well-known problem where the transmission could fail entirely between 80,000 and 120,000 miles. If your TL shifts hard or hesitates, get it checked before you’re stranded on I-95. The newer TLX models are much better in this area, but they can develop power steering pump noise and premature brake wear on the front axle, especially if you commute through stop-and-go traffic in Brookhaven or Springfield every day. Our brake repair team checks pad thickness, rotor condition, and caliper function on every TLX that comes through our bay.
Acura Integra Maintenance
The Integra is back, and we’re already seeing the new 2023+ models come in for their first round of scheduled service. These new Integras use a 1.5L turbocharged engine shared with the Honda Civic Si, so they’re reliable but sensitive to oil quality and change intervals. Classic Integras from the 1990s and early 2000s are still on the road, too. We work on those as well, handling everything from timing belt replacements to aging suspension components. Whether your Integra is brand new or a well-loved classic, we treat it with the care it deserves.
Acura ILX and TSX Repairs
The ILX and TSX are smaller Acura sedans that make great daily drivers for commuters heading to work through Wallingford, Media, and Swarthmore. Common ILX issues include premature tire wear from alignment sensitivity and a dual-clutch transmission in early models (2013–2015) that could shudder at low speeds. The TSX is generally very reliable, though higher-mileage models can develop power steering rack leaks and worn engine mounts that cause vibration at idle. We recommend tire repair and replacement checks every 5,000 miles on these models because Pennsylvania’s rough roads accelerate uneven wear, especially through pothole season.
What Our Acura Service and Repair Covers
S&S Automotive Service handles every aspect of Acura maintenance and repair at our Upland location. Here’s what you can count on:
- Oil Changes and Fluid Services: Acura engines require specific oil grades and filter types to perform at their best. The turbocharged models are especially sensitive to old or incorrect oil. We use the right full synthetic oil for your Acura and follow the manufacturer’s recommended intervals. Regular oil changes are the single best thing you can do to protect your Acura’s engine long-term.
- Brake Service for Acura Vehicles: Acura’s performance braking systems use high-quality components, but they still wear down, especially in Delaware County’s stop-and-go traffic. We replace pads, resurface or replace rotors, and service calipers and brake fluid on all Acura models. If your MDX or TLX is squealing or pulsing when you stop, schedule a brake repair visit before the damage spreads to more expensive parts.
- Engine and Transmission Diagnostics: Acura’s onboard computer systems are sophisticated, and a check engine light can point to dozens of possible causes. We use professional-grade scan tools that read Acura-specific diagnostic codes to find the real problem. Our engine diagnostics service goes beyond reading a code; we test components, check sensor readings, and trace the issue to its source so you’re not paying for guesswork.
- Tire Services: Acura’s sport-tuned suspensions put specific demands on tires. Running the wrong size or type of tire affects handling, ride quality, and safety. We handle flat repairs, rotations, balancing, and full tire repair and replacement for every Acura model. We match tires to your driving style, whether that’s highway commuting on I-476 or daily trips around Upland.
- Electrical System Repairs: Acuras are loaded with technology, from adaptive cruise control to multi-zone climate systems. When something goes wrong electronically, it takes the right tools and experience to pinpoint the cause. Our electrical diagnostics service covers everything from dead batteries and alternator failures to complex module reprogramming and sensor replacements on newer Acura models.
- Pennsylvania Inspection and Emissions Testing: Your Acura needs a yearly safety and emissions check to stay legal on PA roads. We’re a certified state inspection and emissions station, so if your Acura needs any repairs to pass, we handle everything right here at 1 Upland Avenue, no extra trips to another shop.
Keeping Your Acura on Schedule in Southeastern PA
Acura uses a Maintenance Minder system that tells you when service is due based on your actual driving conditions. That’s smart, but it doesn’t account for everything. Pennsylvania’s road salt eats at brake components and undercarriage parts faster than the computer expects. Potholes on Route 352 and Springfield Road knock alignments out of spec. And our humid summers can cause moisture buildup in the brake system that the dashboard light won’t catch.
We suggest Acura owners in the Upland area follow the Maintenance Minder schedule as a baseline, then add a spring undercarriage inspection and a fall battery and coolant check. This extra step catches the Pennsylvania-specific wear that the factory schedule doesn’t account for, and it saves you from unexpected breakdowns when the weather turns.

Acura Service & Repair Questions from Delco Drivers
Acura owners tend to care about their vehicles and ask good questions. Here are the ones we hear most often at our shop, along with straight answers you can count on.
What does the Acura Maintenance Minder mean when it shows a code?
Acura’s Maintenance Minder uses letter and number codes to tell you what service is due. The main code “A” means a basic oil and filter change. Code “B” means oil change plus a mechanical inspection. The sub-codes (1 through 6) tell you about specific services like tire rotation, transmission fluid, spark plugs, or coolant replacement. If you’re not sure what your code means, call us or stop by our shop. We’ll read the code and tell you exactly what your Acura needs, and what can wait if your budget is tight.
Does my Acura really need synthetic oil?
Yes. Most Acura models from the last 15 years require full synthetic oil, and using conventional oil can void your warranty coverage and cause premature engine wear. Acura’s engines are built with tight tolerances that need the consistent viscosity and heat resistance that synthetic oil provides. This is especially true for the turbocharged engines in the RDX and Integra. We always use the correct oil grade specified for your exact Acura model when performing oil changes.
How much does Acura maintenance and repair typically cost?
Acura maintenance and repair costs depend on the model, the mileage, and what service is needed. Routine maintenance like an oil change costs much less than a major service like a timing belt replacement or transmission repair. Because Acuras share many components with Honda, parts are usually more affordable than other luxury brands like BMW or Lexus. We provide a written estimate before starting any work and walk you through what’s needed now versus what can safely wait.
Can an independent shop like S&S work on my Acura without voiding the warranty?
Absolutely. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act is a federal law that protects your right to have your Acura serviced at any qualified repair shop. Your dealership cannot void your warranty just because an independent mechanic changed your oil or replaced your brakes. We document every service we perform on your Acura, including the parts used and fluid specifications, so you have a clear record if the dealer ever asks. Many of our Acura customers switched from the dealership because they get the same quality work with more personal attention and better pricing.
